Technical overview

Design basis
ASTM D3753 for fiberglass manholes. Diameter, depth, laminate, and stiffness are selected for the actual burial and loading conditions.
Base & flow channel
Full FRP base and shaped invert configurations; identify channel size, slope, benching, and inlet/outlet elevations on the drawings.
Connections
Booted or pipe/coupler connection to suit the connecting pipe. Pipe/coupler connections use a pipe stub laminated into the manhole wall with an external coupler. Confirm actual outside diameter, material, and connection angle.
External loading
Check soil pressure, maximum groundwater, empty-structure buckling, and uplift. Traffic loading requires a coordinated cover, slab, and load-transfer design.
Quality documentation
Specify dimensional inspection, laminate properties, stiffness, cure/hardness, and watertightness verification in the submittal package.
Groundwater design reference

Freshwater adds approximately 0.433 psi of external pressure per foot of water head. At 20 ft of head, pressure at the base is about 8.66 psi. This is a hydrostatic reference, not a manhole depth or pressure rating.

Technical overview

Design basis
ASTM D3299-26 covers filament-wound and contact-molded tanks for above-ground vertical atmospheric service. Other orientations, buried installations, pressure, or vacuum require a separate design basis.
Chemical compatibility
Identify every chemical, concentration, specific gravity, operating temperature, and cleaning condition. Resin and corrosion-barrier selection follows the actual service.
Capacity & geometry
Specify working gallons, total gallons, diameter, shell height, freeboard, and bottom geometry. Working capacity excludes unusable volume and required freeboard.
Mechanical details
Coordinate nozzle sizes and locations, vents, access openings, supports, anchorage, and any mixer loads. Wind and seismic loads are location-specific.
Pressure & temperature
Define normal and upset conditions, including filling and emptying. Atmospheric service does not establish a pressure or vacuum rating.
Liquid loading reference

Static liquid pressure ≈ 0.433 × specific gravity × liquid depth (ft), in psi. A 10 ft liquid depth at 1.5 specific gravity produces about 6.50 psi at the bottom, before other design loads are considered.

Technical overview

Structure standard
ASTM D3753 applies to the fiberglass wet well. Pump, electrical, control, access, and station requirements are defined separately by the project.
Hydraulic sizing
Set diameter and depth from inflow, pump duty, cycle time, operating levels, minimum submergence, and emergency storage requirements.
Base & flotation
Select the bottom and anti-flotation arrangement using maximum groundwater and the empty wet well condition. Concrete ballast and anchorage must be designed for the site.
Factory interfaces
Coordinate inlet stubs, discharge penetrations, vent connections, hatch openings, guide-rail brackets, lifting provisions, and pump support loads.
Supply scope
The quotation identifies the FRP wet well and accessories included, and the responsibility for pumps, controls, piping, hatches, installation, and startup.

For a straight cylinder: US gallons ≈ 5.875 × inside diameter² (ft) × liquid depth (ft). The reference volumes below exclude pumps, piping, sloped floors, and freeboard; they are not a stock-size list.

Technical overview

Service standards
ASTM D3262 for gravity sewers; ASTM D3517 for pressure pipe; ASTM D3754 for sewer and industrial pressure service. AWWA C950 and Manual M45 apply where specified.
Dimensions
Identify nominal size, actual inside/outside diameter, wall construction, and laying length. Nominal sizes alone do not establish fit with other pipe materials.
Pressure & stiffness
Select pressure class for operating pressure and surge. Select pipe stiffness separately for burial, bedding, deflection, and buckling conditions.
Joints & restraint
ASTM D4161 addresses flexible elastomeric-seal joints. Confirm gasket compatibility, joint deflection, and thrust restraint or thrust-block requirements.
Installation method
Open-cut, sliplining, and jacking require different checks. Jacking pipe needs verified allowable jacking force, joint design, alignment, and launch/reception details.
Read pipe ratings correctly

Pipe stiffness (PS), commonly specified in psi in US projects, is not the internal pressure rating. For example, 36 psi pipe stiffness does not mean a 36 psi operating-pressure rating. International SN values use a different stiffness convention. Specify the test method and units; do not substitute the numbers directly. Available diameters and classes are confirmed with the proposed manufacturer.
